N.B.
Harriet Randall Lumis was born in 1870 in Salem, Connecticut. She showed interest in art early on, but became more focused on creating and studying art in her early 20s. Known primarily as a landscape artist, Lumis often worked en plein air to capture New England scenery. She was deeply influenced by impressionism and even sought lessons from notable impressionist Hugh Breckenridge.

Lumis was an active and passionate member of the New England art community. She helped to promote local artists through the Springfield Art League, and she was one of the founding members of the Academic Artists Association which supported realism in art. She was strong in her belief that realism was superior to abstraction, and her work clearly shows her preference for traditional scenes. Lumis was also a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. Later on in life, she found purpose as an art teacher and gave private lessons for the remainder of her career. Lumis died in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1953.
