A Milchglas teabowl and saucer, Swiss, German or Venetian, mid-18th century

In opaque white glass and of attractive small size, finely moulded with radial flutes, the teabowl with an everted rim, mottled in iron-red and bright blue to the exteriors, applied with trailed footrings in opaque white, saucer 11.3cm diam, teabowl 3.9cm high (2)

Footnotes

Excavations of related fragments of Milchglas at the Flüli glassworks in Switzerland has led to the assumption of a Swiss origin for all Milchglas decorated in this distinctive way, but it is likely that it was made in other centres, including in Venice and Germany, see Anna-Elisabeth Theuerkauff-Liederwald, Venezianisches Glas der Veste Coburg (1994), p.493, no.618. A very similar example is illustrated by Rainer Rückert, Die Glassammlung des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums München, Vol.1 (1982), Vol.1, pl.128, no.459. For another example in a monochrome palette, see lot 4 in this sale.
