12mo (144 x 79 mm). Vertical half-title. Contemporary paneled calf, rebacked to style, custom cloth chemise and morocco slipcase by Morrell, London. Rubbed, lacking final blank P4, extensive pen and pencil marginalia and notations on all endpapers, ink notations to half title ("A very rare and a very curious book"), ink ownership stamp on half-title, browning and some chipping to page edges.

SHAKESPEARE'S SON-IN-LAW'S MAGNUM OPUS. John Hall, the only physician practicing at Stratford at that time, married Shakespeare's elder daughter Susanna in 1607. After Hall's death his widow sold his medical manuscript notes "to James Cooke (1614-1688), a civil war surgeon from Warwick, in 1643. Cooke translated the notes into English, with minor amendments, and the first edition of Select Observations ... appeared in 1657" (ODNB). "His Select Observations is interesting primarily as a piece of medical Shakespeareana" (Norman). Wing H356; Krivatsy 5127 (lacking half-title); Norman 971.
